AcidicLemon: So I hate living in the south. ]:

Then get the f*ck out, how 'bout that?

This is much ado anbout nothing--as usual, with the media. None of you would be freaking out if it was a JP refusing to marry a GAY couple so quit acting like you're so offended and making your ignorant snap judgements about the South. I'm a LOT more Pissed off that the couple is now considering "legal action". That to me says that the real motivation behind the couple's public outrage is M-O-N-E-Y. Otherwise, why the f*ck do they need to take any legal action whatsoever? No harm done=---they got married after all, end of story. Dragging the incident into the public eye is nothing more than a publicity stunt/another couple of attention whores loking for their 15 minutes of fame.

MrUnlucky-please stop proving people's ignorant views about the south right. what was his reasons? maybe he hates interracial couples AND their children, how about that? he is a public servant and discrimination like this, specifically like this, would not have a sound reason at all. and for the article, why hasn't this guy been reported until now? he was on the bench for 34 years and his term is up in 2014 and he has had NO complaints until now? wow.

It's junk like this that makes me embarrassed to be from the south, which is hard to do. It pisses me off so much that there is still people who think this. I guarantee you this guy goes home, drinks, smokes, screws his wife/husband in the ass and does all kinds of things that a lot of people would have a problem with. But this ass thinks he has a right to judge someone elses decision....dude needs to grow up!

This man said he wanted to keep from being responsible for how their children, if they even end up having any, grow up in society. It could be that, or it could be an excuse for him not wanting to give them the license just because they were interracial. But none of you, including me, have any idea what this man was thinking when he rejected them. Or when he rejected other interracial couples. So who are we to judge? If it was truly the reason he said, then okay, I understand that. And if it was really that he is racist, then I'm sorry for the couples he rejected and sorry for him. Either way, even if he believed that he was doing the right thing, was it his right to deny them a license? Is it considered breaking the law, or was he justified? Can you control who gets married just because their children might have a hard time growing up? How could you be so sure? You can't base a human's life off of statistics.

And also, don't judge the South if you've never lived down here. How do yo

... and is probably not doing it out of 'racism' or malice.

I'm getting so tired of the usage of the term 'racism' to describe anything that is superficially a consequence of someone's skin color. Racism is defined as "a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race. (Merriam-Webster)" That's not what this guy is saying - and I have no reason to doubt him. He's saying that either our society or genetic disposition imposes additional hurdles to the life quality of mixed-race children than of their single-race cousins. My (notably incomplete) understanding of genetics indicates that it's not the latter. So, he seems to be saying that people of mixed races have a harder time in society. That's probably true! If true, the question is whether that's sufficient grounds for his refusal.

First, let me say that I'm an Indian (not Native American) man married to a Spanish woman. Of course, I don't agree with the judge in this matter.

But...

It comes down to whether you believe that social institutions such as the judiciary should have the social obligation (or right) to exercise discretion when they believe that it's in society's best interest. Of course, that's exactly why we HAVE judges - to exercise discretion in the exercise of judgement of the law.

Studies do show that mixed-race children suffer psychological and other health-related issues more than children that identify with a single race. For example, a study conducted by the UNC-Chapel Hill and the NIH some years ago showed that children that identified with two or more races suffered more from substance abuse, depression and other problems than those who identified with one race - regardless of the race.

I think this is going a bit far on the judge's part, but he does think that what he's doing is righ

Slade8,
Oh my God you're so right. I mean, all of us in the south are just a bunch of conservative idiots who don't know a thing! Thank you for pointing it out. Really, thank you. Because I'm sure you know what it's like living down here. Surely you're not just quoting a stereotype. Surely.

and @Vindictive "my girlfriend lives in louisiana and going just by what she says, it's like another country down there."
it kinda is a nother country...Lousiana is the only state with parishes and not counties. and it still goes by Napolianic Law, also the only state with that.

Louisiana has always been this way people...and if you didnt know that already and the 1st time u heard of anything like this in LA...then YOU ARE THE STUPID ONE...not the people in Louisiana, to us *louisianans* thats just how it is. People are very tradisional there, and history wise, it wasnt long ago that you would be killed if you even thought about being with a black person. Yes, i do agree it is wrong and stupid, you have the right to do it now, but like i said, they were brought up that way and thats just how it is, so you cant really blame them.

Sadly... I am not surprised. A lot of people are so f-cking ass backwards down there. It's like they never got past the 1800s.

Why do people insist on using the word 'race'? We're all human. That's all. There are no 'races', and certainly not any based on the stupidly weak premise of skin colour.
