Sunday, October 25, 2009 7:24:49 PM emily1991, probably because the english speakers are notorious for prouncing foreign words the way they think they "should" be pronounced rather than trying to pronounce them the proper way? |

Sunday, October 25, 2009 8:22:15 AM It is drived from two very very common dutch names back in the day. Jan & Kees, when the english would talk about the dutch settelement on Manna Hatta, they would say, all those Jans and Kees' up there, over time it became yankee. |

Saturday, October 24, 2009 1:18:50 PM Alternatively...John Bull was a character representing England in some popular political satires. 'Janke' could have been a diminuitive Dutch form of 'John', which could have been used by Dutch settlers to insult English settlers. Somewhat like calling USA people 'Sammy' as a diminuitive form of {uncle) Sam. |

Saturday, October 24, 2009 1:05:06 PM "i thought it was threw dutch settlement.. the blokes were named Yan the females were named Kee(or well at least pronounced that way)" Probably Dutch, yes, but how likely is it that all the men in the settlement had the same name and all the women had the same name? 'Jan Kees', was a derisive way to refer to Dutch people, back in the day. People took some negative stereotypes of Dutch people and attached a fairly silly name to them (it would be 'John Cheese' in English) to use as an insult. It would be roughly like making an exagerrated character of a slow-witted white trash redneck bigot, calling it something like Billy-Bob and then calling people from the USA 'Billibobs'. It seems that Dutch and English colonists took to using it to insult each other and it stuck. 'j' in most European languages is pronounced much like 'y' in English, hence 'yankees'. |
